TUCJ and CJA: System for systematic abuse of journalists

23.09.2021.

"Insurance Decision" of the Municipal Civil Court in Zagreb of September 21, 2021, which imposes a temporary measure banning the Association of Independent Media Culture, publisher of the non-profit portal H-alter, from publishing articles about the director of the Child and Youth Protection Polyclinic of Zagreb Ms. Gordana Buljan Flander, the Croatian judiciary has resorted to unprecedented censorship "in advance".

After H-alter published a series of articles by journalist Jelena Jindra in the past few weeks entitled "System for the Protection or Abuse of Children?" in which she problematizes the work of Ms. Gordana Buljan Flander, director of Polyclinic, judge Andrija Krivak signed a scandalous decision forbidding a media outlet from writing about a certain person.

The court assessed the journalistic research of colleague Jindra without hearing the editor or journalist and the publisher's representative. Instead of discussing any doubts in the regular trial, the judge decided to further ban H-alter from investigating the actions of a public institution and its director! Such a precedent could be disastrous for media freedom in Croatia.

After years of witnessing SLAPP lawsuits against journalists, this time the judiciary went a step further and directly decided to silence the media. It should be noted that the director of the Polyclinic Ms. Buljan Flander and her associates, according to the testimony of colleagues, have repeatedly missed the opportunity to present to the public their view of the controversial doctrine of "child alienation" which some experts testify often abuses against women victims of violence.

The Croatian Journalists 'Association and the Trade Union of Croatian Journalists believe that this is a dangerous attempt of censorship and inadmissible silencing the media!

CJA and TUCJ therefore call on all Croatian media, all journalists and editors, to resist this form of pressure and, in solidarity with their colleague Jindra and the non-profit portal H-alter, broadcast the research series "System for the Protection or Abuse of Children?" and thus show we cannot be silenced!
